Pocket watch and rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed pocket watch with its movement exposed sits at the centre, with Roman numerals on the dial and a repeated Roman numeral pattern below it. Birds fly across the design and a large rose with soft shading sits at the bottom of the forearm. The piece uses black and grey tones with fine gradients and high contrast, and the photograph is taken against a patterned rug.

The movement came apart under Ada's tweezers the way it always did, one brass wheel at a time, and by the third she had stopped hearing the shop bell or the carrier's cart rattling over the cobbles outside.

The watch had come in on a Tuesday, wrapped in a handkerchief that smelled of coal smoke. Its case was dented along one side, and somebody had slipped a rose petal under the glass, pressed so flat it had turned the colour of weak tea. Ada had not asked who. People brought her things that had stopped, and they never liked to say when.
By evening she had the balance wheel free and the mainspring cleaned. When she set the escapement ticking on the bench, a rook landed on the gutter outside the window and tilted its head, then another, until a dozen birds sat along the sill as though they had been called. Ada took it for nothing more than a good, clean tick. Then she noticed the hands had been left at twenty to four, and the initials scratched inside the lid were her mother's.
She wound it fully and turned the hour hand forward through the dead years, slowly, so the teeth would not catch. The rooks lifted together and wheeled above the station yard. Ada set the watch on the sill where the last of the light could reach its face, and left the petal where it lay.
