Clockwork gears and pocket watch design
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows interlocking cogs and gears, a coiled chain and a pocket watch with Roman numerals on its face, arranged in a vertical S-shaped flow. The drawing uses clean, even black outlines with no shading or fill, and the composition is an open, unshaded line drawing on a white background. It appears to be a stencil-ready tattoo design rather than a photograph of skin.

Diary, 3.40 a.m., Ward 9 corridor. The clock above the nurses' station stopped again at twenty past one, so I've been running the place on my grandfather's pocket watch. Gold-plated, the glass cracked across the four o'clock numeral, and a chain that tangles if you look at it wrong. Gwen on the desk says it's the only accurate thing in the building, which is a lie, but I like her for telling it.

Tonight the lift went twice between the basement and the morgue, and both times the doors opened on nobody. Mr Okafor in bay C asked me the time and I told him the watch's time, not the wall's, and he nodded as if that settled something. The chain kept catching on the gears of the counterweight I've been told never to touch. I have the grease on my cuff to prove I did.
At half four I took the back off the watch to see why it was losing ten minutes a night. Inside, a wheel no bigger than a lentil, and beside it a tiny cog with two teeth missing. My grandfather would have cursed in Punjabi and then fixed it with a matchstick. I used a paper clip. It ticks now. Gwen says that's the same thing as being right.
Handover is at seven. I'll give the day shift the watch and tell them the wall clock is a liar. Then I'll walk home along the canal and count the locks, because every one of them is a gear someone else set turning.
