Steampunk key with gears and roses
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a large key running vertically through the composition, with gears and cogs along its shaft and bow. Roses, leaves and curling scrollwork fill the space around the key, with the roses clustered at the top, middle and bottom. The linework is uniform and unshaded on a white background, with no colour.

Mind the bottom step, it's been loose since the spring gales. Ada Rennick kept the clock tower at Saltmere Quay the way her father had, with oil on Thursdays and a rag for every cog. The tower held three hundred teeth of brass between its floors, and not one of them was allowed to rust, because if the great wheel stopped, the tide tables stopped, and the boats went out blind.

The trouble came the November the harbourmaster's widow died and her lockbox went missing from the chandlery. Inside it, folks said, was a key nobody in Saltmere had seen for thirty years. It was as long as a forearm, its bow cut like a rose wrapped in wheels, its bit notched like the roofs of a little town. Old Tobias Vane had built the tower and then, so the story went, built that key to open it again. Ada found it lying in the weed below the slipway, still warm from somebody's pocket, and she carried it up the one hundred and twelve steps without once looking back.
She fitted it to the tower door and turned. The great wheel didn't run forward. It ran backward, slow as a funeral, and every clock in the town ran with it. The gulls came down off the chimneys. The cockerel on the chandler's roof crowed at the wrong hour. The boats that had sailed at dawn came nosing home through the mist, all of them, as if the morning had never been spent.
So if you hear Saltmere's bell strike thirteen some winter night, don't be frightened. That's only Ada, winding the town back to the hour it was lost, and leaving the key where the gulls can't reach it.
