Clover and heart on upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A photograph from behind of a person's upper back showing a tattoo of a thin black vertical line running down the spine. To one side sits a purple heart outlined in dark line, and to the other a yellow and green clover, with soft blue wash splashes around the line. The colours are loose and watercolour-like, set against a plain skin background and a painted canvas behind the shoulders.

One wet Tuesday he found a clover growing out of a crack beside the bin chute, three leaves green as pond weed and a fourth gone yellow from the frost. Lying next to it was a purple glass button shaped like a heart, dropped by a girl who'd been playing hopscotch on the landing. Ivo drew one black line straight down the wall from ceiling to skirting, right through the middle of both, then washed blue water over it so it looked like rain had caught on the plaster.

When the block came down years later, that line was the last thing standing. The girl, grown and grey, came to watch with the button in her palm. She said the line was the spine of the building and the clover and the heart were the two halves it had kept apart. Ivo had only meant it as a neat edge for the paint. She pressed the button into the blue wash, lifted it away, and left a purple ring on the air where the wall had been.
