Black mandala on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala covers much of the upper back, with a central radiating motif of petals, lotus-like shapes and small circles. The design is built from solid black ink and fine dotted and linear detail, with no grey shading or colour. The tattoo is centred in the frame against a dark patterned fabric backdrop, and the subject's hair falls over the upper edges of the design.

Sit down, the lift's not coming and it never does before dark, so you may as well hear this. Four blocks, a ring of concrete round a car park nobody parked in, and a single bench at the middle where the wind sat down to rest. Nobody believed her until the summer the council painted the stairwell doors.

Her grandson Tomasz was nine, and he had a compass from a school bag, the kind with a point that scratches. He sat on the landing every evening drawing circles on the painted wall with the pin end, very small, one dot at a time. Dots first, then petals, then a ring of tiny rounds like beads on a string. Mrs Okafor watched him from her doorway with her arms folded and said nothing, which for her was a kind of blessing.
By October the wall held a mandala as wide as a dustbin lid, and lads from the flats above had started coming down to add their own dots at the edges. The caretaker arrived with a bucket and a face like a closed door. Mrs Okafor took him up to her kitchen, sat him at the table, and made him count the petals aloud until he got bored and went home. Next morning the bucket was still full and the wall was still there.
The caretaker never managed to tell where Tomasz had started or which of the lads had finished it. So nobody owns the first dot on a place like this, and everybody stands inside the ring when they wait for the lift.
