Coffee spoon quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a single outlined coffee spoon with the typewriter-style quote I have measured out my life with coffee spoons set beside and beneath it. The linework is clean and uniform, with no shading, and the spoon's bowl and handle are drawn in a simple outline. The ink is black on a light skin tone, and the composition is a close, mostly straight-on view of the arm.

Vera had the kettle on before the lift finished its grinding climb to the eleventh floor, and by the time she let herself in the flat smelled of toast and typewriter oil. The old portable sat on the kitchen table where Dennis had left it the week he moved out, its ribbon gone the colour of weak tea. She fed a clean sheet under the roller, reached for the tin of coffee spoons with the dented handle, and counted out three for the pot and one more for luck.

The letter was to the council. Six weeks without hot water on the stairwell, and she meant to say so plainly, in capitals where it counted. She typed the first line, then stopped to stir, and the spoon chimed against the mug the way it had every morning for thirty years in the claims office in Holborn. Back then the days had come in neat little measures, tea and paperwork and carbon copies that never lined up, and nobody had thought to ask whether a life could be portioned out like that until most of it was already spent.
She had got as far as Dear Sirs when the lights flickered and the fridge sighed into silence. Down in the car park a child was shouting for her, the boy from flat four who fetched her shopping on Thursdays. Vera pulled the sheet free, folded it once, and wrote on the back in pencil: the water, the lift, the thirty-one stairs she counted each evening. Then she tipped the coffee into the pot and left the spoon standing in it, where she would be sure to find it again.
