L'amour fou script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line tattoo on the inner forearm, showing the words l'amour fou in cursive script with a thin unbroken line extending from the left. The linework is single weight black ink with no visible shading. The background is out of focus and shows a blue area, with the tattoo placed across the middle of the frame.

Put the kettle on before you touch that key, girl. The cable has been sulking since noon and I am not climbing down to the cellar on an empty stomach. Sit. Take the pencil. I'll give you the message the way Mr Tolley gave it to me, word for word, and you'll not improve it.

It came in at ten past three from a steamer lying off Bilbao, four words under the tariff: l'amour fou. The clerk wanted to bin it as a typing error, but the current held it perfectly, one unbroken stroke across the sheet, the way a fishing line runs straight when something heavy is on the other end and nobody is hauling. Nobody could agree what the sender owed the company, so nobody paid it.
I have kept that slip in my apron pocket for forty-one years. Every spring my husband asked why I carried a telegraph form with no name on it, and every spring I told him it was a bill I had never settled. Last Tuesday a man from the Post Office came to say the old station is to be pulled down, so I walked out to the headland to see the wall where the line used to come in. Nothing left but a rusted bracket and a gull sitting on it, looking pleased with itself.
I took the slip out and wrote my answer on the back in pencil. One word, the same one I'd been carrying all those years. Then I held it up to the wind and let it go, and I watched it run out over the water as straight as the line ever did.
