Coiling dragon design in pencil

Japanese · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed drawing of a dragon with a horned head, open jaws and long whiskers, its scaled body coiling across the sheet with clawed feet reaching out at the top, middle and bottom. The shading is built from fine pencil hatching and stippling, with soft tonal gradients on the scales and dark shadows behind the coils. The sheet is monochrome with a warm grey cast and the composition fills a tall, vertical frame, suited to a large back or sleeve piece.

Sit still, the pair of you, and stop picking at the tar on the bench. Yes, the whiskers matter. Old Hob Tremayne swore they were long as a mooring rope and that you could read the weather in them, the way the gulls read the crusts on the quay.

That was the spring the fog came in off the Mouse Rock and stayed nine days. Nobody could see past the bow of their own boat. On the tenth morning the mist tore open over the harbour wall, and out of it came a dragon, coiling round the chapel tower the way a cat winds round a chair leg. Its claws hooked the slate roof. Its scales lay over the town like wet shingle, grey as pewter, and every one of them caught the light. Its whiskers trailed down into the water and stirred it.

Hob's daughter Nell had gone down early to mend the nets, and the dragon's breath came down on her as a cold rain that smelt of sea salt and burnt matches. The nets had caught on one of its feet. Hob went down the steps with a lantern, expecting to be eaten, and instead found the great head lowered to his level, one eye as wide as a cartwheel, and heard it say, quite politely, that it would like its cloud back. So he unpicked the knots one by one until the creature was free, and it lifted off the harbour without a sound.

The fog never came back. We had the hottest summer anyone can remember, and the gulls went hungry. But if you ever stand on that wall at dusk and see a long grey shape riding the cloud over the Rock, don't wave. It hates being waved at.
