Japanese dragon with chrysanthemums
Japanese · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a long, serpentine dragon with horned head, whiskers and a finely scaled body, coiled across the page. Two or three chrysanthemum blooms sit at the lower left and a tail curls towards the bottom, with swirling wind or cloud lines around the figure. The work uses soft graphite shading and hatching on white paper, with a dark outline and light tonal modelling on the scales.

The snow had sealed the pass by mid-afternoon, and Hanae was still on her knees in the upstairs corridor, wedging a folded towel under the door of the room where the stranger slept. Below, the kettle ticked on the iron hearth. Her grandmother's voice came back to her, saying the pass always closes on the day you least want it to.

The stranger had climbed the valley road at dusk with a wooden crate strapped to his back. He would not say what was inside, only that it had to stay dry and out of the cold. Hanae gave him the room beside the old screen, the one with the dragon painted in ink and silver that her grandmother had hung there sixty years before. Its scales were built up in fine hatching, and the chrysanthemums at its foot were the only things in the room that still kept their colour.
Near midnight she heard the crate open. She went down in her socks and found him kneeling before the screen with a map of the valley spread across his knees. The dragon's whiskers seemed to lift as the draught moved through the room. "It is not a painting," he said quietly. "It is where the river goes when it is frightened." He traced the cloud lines with one finger, down past the flowers to the floorboards, and Hanae saw that they stopped exactly at the edge of the old well.
In the morning the pass was clear and the crate was gone. Beneath the screen, pressed flat into the dust, lay a single white chrysanthemum petal, though every flower outside was buried under snow. Hanae left it where it lay, and she never swept that corner again.
