Colourful floral side piece with palm trees
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo runs down the side of the torso, combining pink and yellow plumeria flowers, teal scrolling swirls and green leaves. Above them, purple palm trees and a stylised wave fade into an orange and yellow sunset background. Bold outlines and saturated colour dominate the composition, which wraps from the upper ribs down towards the hip.

The boats came in on the evening tide, and you were the one who had to count them off the slipway. Nine hulls, painted in the faded blues the harbour master insisted on, nudging against the wall while gulls worked the fish boxes. Your uncle Teodor always said the sea kept a tally of everyone it lent a boat to, and you never knew whether he meant it as a joke.

That week the swell came up brown and quick, and the lanterns on the quay swung in it like tired bells. Nobody wanted to go out past the breakwater, so you went alone in the little skiff with the split oar, following the water that ran green where the warm current ran into the cold. Past the rocks the sky turned the colour of an apricot left too long on the sill, and the palms on the far headland caught it, their fronds black and feathery against the glow.
You saw the wave before you felt it, a long purple curl rising where no wave should be, and in its hollow a scatter of pink flowers floated like lanterns that had slipped their strings. You reached for one with the oar hand. It was warm, and it smelled of the sweet stuff the market women sold in paper cones, and the teal vines that wound round the boat's ribs seemed to pull you gently toward home.
When the nine boats came in at dawn, you were already on the slipway with the flower tucked behind your ear. Teodor counted the hulls, then counted you, and said nothing at all, which from him was the same as a blessing.
