Scrolling ornament and waves on a limb
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows interlocking pale peach scrolls and acanthus-like flourishes outlined in black, set over swirling purple and turquoise waves. A dark feather or wing form appears at the upper right. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with soft gradients in the blue and purple areas, and the skin looks freshly tattooed and glossy.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ceiling of Ebenezer chapel had been painted by a man who had never seen the sea, or so Mam said, yet he had drawn waves across it anyway, purple and green, curling up over the pulpit as if they meant to get in.

Dad said the scrolls were copied from a shell in a book the painter had carried over from Newcastle, and that the peach edging was the colour of the inside of your cheek. I wasn't allowed up the ladder. When the shaft flooded in the spring, the men stood under those waves for three days waiting on the pumps, and nobody prayed much. They just looked up and counted the curls.
I went up the ladder the summer I was twelve, with a rag and a bucket of lime wash for the damp patch above the organ. The paint under my palm was cool and soft, the blue gone grey at the edges where the rain had got in. In the corner a black wing had been painted by someone who loved birds more than hymns, and one feather had lifted clean off the plaster as though it meant to leave.
I scrubbed the stain round that feather and left the rest alone. When Dad came to fetch me down he stood at the foot of the ladder with his lamp held high and said nothing. He only let the light run up the curls and back down again, the way you'd test a rope before you trusted it.
