Colourful graffiti-style angry face drawing

Colour · Flash

A coloured pencil drawing of a grinning, angry-looking character face with a blocky, stacked head and clenched teeth. The outlines are bold and black, with soft rainbow shading in yellow, orange, blue and green across the face and pink and purple shapes flowing outward on either side. The design sits centred on a plain white background, with a teal curl trailing off to the upper right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had already repainted the mask three times by the time the wasps gave up on the press house, and still the thing glared at her from the barn door as if it held her personally responsible. Its blocky head was the colour of a sherbet lolly, yellow bleeding into orange, then blue, then a green nobody had chosen on purpose. Her uncle called it the Gaffer. Nobody remembered who had painted it first, only that it had been there since before the orchard went to seed.

"It's putting the pickers off," Uncle Ted said, leaning on the gate with a mug of tea he would not share. "Two of the Polish lads wouldn't come past it after dark. Said it was watching them."

"It's watching the wasps," Dilys said. "That's what it's for." She dipped her brush in the pink, the pink that spilled out either side of the face like smoke from a bonfire, and worked it carefully into the damp plaster at the corner where the paint had cracked. Above the grinning teeth, where the old mask had nothing but bare board, she began a teal curl, slow and lazy, the kind of flourish a boy would draw in the margin of a maths book.

Ted stopped chewing his biscuit. "That's new."

"It's the Gaffer's hair."

"It's got no hair."

"It does now."

He laughed, a short bark that startled a blackbird out of the Discovery tree, and for once the face looked less like a threat and more like something that had finally been let in on a joke. Behind them the first windfalls thumped into the long grass, sweet and split and humming. Dilys capped the paint, wiped her fingers on her dungarees and did not look back at the barn, because she already knew the Gaffer was grinning.
