Geometric lion head line drawing
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A lion head is drawn in black pen on white paper, with its mane and face formed from sharp, angular facets. The linework uses dense parallel hatching and fine cross lines to create shading and texture across the mane, while the face is left more open around the eyes and nose. The drawing is in black ink only and fills most of the frame, with a light pencil sketch faintly visible beneath it.

The lens came to Carrick Holm in forty crates, each prism wrapped in newsprint from a city we had never visited, and my task was to clean them every morning before the sun got its fingers on the glass. Mr Orrin Vell, who had kept the light before me, had left a ledger with one line on every page: Polish, then polish again. I took him at his word for nine winters.

The trouble was the lion. Not a real one, but a pattern cut into the bronze hood above the lamp by some dead foundryman who had wanted his mane to throw light in every direction. Each facet was a little mirror. On clear nights the beam broke into hatched strokes across the water, and the boats coming in from Seaton tracked along it like sheep on a drove road. Vell wrote that the lion looked out for ships. I wrote that it looked as if it was counting them.
In the spring of the tenth year a fog came in thick enough to swallow the gull cries, and I climbed the iron stair with a rag in my fist and a cold feeling in my hands. The lamp had cracked a pane in the night. I could see the lion through the gap, its eyes still open, its mane full of rain. I set the glass by feel, hummed the tune Vell used while he worked, and did not look at the water.
When the fog lifted, the Seaton boat was already home, and the lion's shadow lay dark across the rocks where it had always been, neat and sharp as ruled lines. Someone had left a fresh bread roll on the step below the gallery. I never learned who. I ate it at the rail and watched the light go round.
