Colourful swirl on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A loose swirl of painterly strokes in orange, yellow, blue, teal and green wraps around a glowing orange circle at the centre. The brushlike edges fade into the skin with no hard outlines, and the palette is bright and saturated. The arm is shown from the elbow area down, with a white backdrop and a person in an orange top and rolled jeans beside it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bride's mother had hung every scrap of cloth she owned along the hedge, and still the wind kept tearing the colours loose. Blue went over the wall. Green caught in the apple tree. The potter's boy stood in the yard in his good boots and tried to look as though he were not counting the clouds.

Then the sun came down the lane. Nobody had asked it. It had heard about the wedding from the swallows and did not like to miss a thing. It was round and low and rather hot, and it hung itself over the gate like a lantern. The guests stepped back. The old fiddler kept playing because he could not see his own feet anyway.

The sun looked at the cloth on the hedge and said it had never seen anything so bold. It asked the bride's mother what she wanted. She said she wanted the wind to stop. So the sun took the loose colours off the hedge, one at a time, the blue and the teal and the green and the yellow of a cowslip, and it wound them round itself the way a girl winds ribbon round her finger, slow and careful, until it was wearing them like a shawl.

When it let go, the colours hung in the air a moment, turning, then settled over the yard and sank into the flagstones and the sleeves of the guests. Nobody saw where they went. The wind lay down. The bride laughed so hard she had to sit on the step, and the sun, pleased with itself, shone on the pair of them until supper. Then it went home, leaving a warm ring on the path where it had sat.
