Wave and feather on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo across the forearm shows a curling wave with spray droplets on the left, shaded with stippled dots, and sweeping feather or leaf forms on the right drawn in fine black linework. The composition flows diagonally from the wrist side towards the elbow, with the wave's crest breaking into dotted texture. The piece uses black ink only, with grey tones created by the dot density and the open skin showing around the design.

The tide came up Cutter Lane that winter with a grey feather riding on top of it, and nobody in the street would touch it. Mrs Abney swept her step at midnight, as she always did, and the water did not drain away. It stood in the gutter, black and flat, and the feather turned on it slowly, like a hand testing the air.

Her husband had gone out on the Thursday boat and not come back, and the gulls over the wharves had been crying all week. The lamplighter, a thin man called Tobias Reeve, said the sea had only come up to collect what it was owed. He told her to leave a bowl of salt on the sill and a pin in the cloth. Mrs Abney did neither. She put on her coat and walked down to the river wall with the feather in her fist.
At the wall the water rose in curls, one after another, each crest breaking into a spray of tiny lights that fell back on the stones like rain. Where the wave rolled through the wind, the spray smoothed and lay flat on the water and became a boat. Her husband stood in it, shaking the drops from his hair, grinning the way he did when he had landed something big.
'You're late,' he said. 'The lamps are lit.' She took his hand and the tide carried them both out past the last of the lights. In the morning Cutter Lane was dry, the gutter was full of feathers, and the lamplighter swept them up without counting.
