Fine line colour tattoo of a teal swirl and red and orange wavy shapes with a small purple dot on the forearm, with a beach behind.

Colourful swirl tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A fine line tattoo on the outer forearm shows a teal curl that resembles a shell or tail, beside red and orange wavy strands with a small purple dot above them. The linework is thin and even, with the colours kept separate and a soft, faded look. The arm sits in the foreground against a blurred beach with breaking waves and rocks.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The murex shells were stinking again by the time Tamar carried the third basket up from the shore, and my father swore at the gulls for pecking the crushed ones before the vats were ready. I was nine that summer and had been given the job of counting. Each shell gave its drop of colour only if you cracked it at the right moment. Late, and it gave nothing but a grey smear.

Tamar had a sharp tongue and a sharper eye. She pulled a shell from the wet sand, turned it to the light and said the sea was drawing us a picture if we cared to look. Behind her the waves broke white over the rocks, and the foam stood up in curls before it fell. "Watch the water when it reaches for the stones," she said. "Then you'll know how to lay the thread."

That autumn a merchant from the harbour ordered a length of cloth for his daughter's wedding. My father dyed it the deep purple he was known for, but the merchant wanted something lighter, a sunset for the bride to walk into. Tamar took the spare threads from the bottom of the vat, the ones that had run red and orange with the sea-urchin ochre, and wove them through the border in the shape of the foam she had shown me.

The cloth went to the harbour on a cart. Years later I saw it again on a cousin's shoulder at a feast, the purple faded to a bruise, the red and orange still bright at the edges, where the waves had been.
