Watercolour heart on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A loose heart outline sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, drawn with blue lines and filled with soft teal wash. Pink and orange touches appear along the right side, and small blue splatters spread out from the lower edge. The background is plain white, and the arm and hand are shown from a slight angle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The blue ran out in the second week of frost, the way it always did when Mrs Ashdown bought her pigment from the carrier and not from the town. Ellen Marsh stood at the dye-house door with a cracked saucer in her hands and watched the lane for a cart that would not come until spring.

Her grandmother had told her that the wood below the village kept a spring where colour pooled, and that if you dipped a brush and drew a heart on the nearest stone before the sun cleared the beeches, the stone would give back a little of what it had taken. Ellen did not believe it. She went anyway, with an empty jar, a brush made from a fox's tail she had bought off a poacher, and her grandmother's tin of gall.

The spring was grey as dishwater. She knelt, dipped the brush, and drew a loose heart on a flat stone, pressing hard enough that the lines bled into the moss. She filled the inside with what she had: a wash of green-blue from the spring's skin, a lick of rose where the frost had split her lip, and a last spatter flicked from the bristles when a jay startled off the branch above her. The water in the jar turned the colour of a kingfisher.

When she came back up the lane the saucer was full of tinted water and the carrier's cart stood at the gate, its driver stamping his feet. He looked at the stains running to her wrists and asked what she had been doing in the wood. She showed him the jar. He took a pinch of her wash for his son's sampler and went off whistling, and Ellen stood a long while wondering which of them the spring had really been painting.
