Compass rose and anchor design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black ink drawing of a compass rose with an eight-point star and a ringed centre, set over a ship's anchor. The letters N, E, S and W mark the cardinal points around the rose. The image is a plain white background with solid black linework and no shading or colour, and the design is centred on the page.

The anchor is the first thing the old pilot makes you carry, long before he trusts you with the steering oar. You drag its heavy stock up the shingle at Gadir every dawn, and every dawn he asks which way the sea is breathing. You point. He spits. You are wrong, he says, because the wind off the headland has no interest in your arm.

He draws the rose for you in wet sand with a broken oar: a ring, a star of eight rays, and at the head of the northern ray a letter he scratches with his thumbnail. Boreas for the north wind, he says, the first of the names you must learn. East, south and west follow, each with its own weather and its own temper. He taps the centre, the small hard knot where every ray meets, and tells you a man who keeps his finger on that point never gets lost, only late.

The season the Carthaginian hulls come through, a squall takes the anchor off the bow. The cable runs out through your hands until the rope burns the skin raw, and you let go rather than go over with it. Watching the buoy bob away towards the reef, you feel his grip on your shoulder for the first time. He says nothing about the iron. He only asks which way the land is now.

You close your eyes and turn your face to the wind, the way he taught you, and the answer comes back plain as the spokes of the rose: south, and a little west. He nods once. Tomorrow you will dive for the anchor. Tonight you take the oar.
