Compass rose with flying birds
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black compass rose sits inside a broken circular ring, with long pointed star arms and a shorter eight-point star beneath, centred on a filled black disc. Three bird silhouettes fly in a loose diagonal arc in the upper right, and the cardinal points are labelled in a serif italic script. The design is drawn in flat black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The wind came through the arrow slit at Harrowgate Keep every morning, and every morning my grandfather pressed his palm to the stone and swore it had blown in from Norway. He was never wrong about the weather, only about everything else. I was eleven when he showed me the compass carved above the garderobe door, its arms worn soft as soap, the outer ring broken where the mason must have stopped for his dinner and never come back to finish it.

Beside it, three birds had been cut into the same sandstone, wings swept up and to the right, as though they had only just lifted off the rim. Grandfather called them the Keep crows, though they were far too neat for crows. When the sea mist rolled over the walls they seemed to shift a little, and he would tap the glass of his watch and say that carved things keep their own time.
The summer the council put the place up for sale, he stopped coming down to the bailey. I found him in the solar with the window open and a map of the Farne coast spread across his knees. He had drawn a line from the compass's north point, through the middle of the ruin, past the birds and out over the water. Beyond the margin, in pencil, he had written: follow them when you are ready. Underneath, smaller, that they never once came back the same way.
I folded the map along his line, buttoned it inside my coat, and walked out through the gatehouse with the wind at my back, the way the birds were facing.
