Compass rose and torn skin shoulder tattoo
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits on the shoulder, with fine linework for its points and rings. Below it, the upper arm and chest show shaded clouds, rock and what appears to be a map-like surface, set within a torn-skin effect. The work uses soft greys and dark shadows, and the image is a close, angled view of the arm and upper torso.

The damp came through the parlour wall at Gull Cottage every March, and every March Mrs Pargeter sent me up the ladder with a bucket of lime wash and a fresh opinion about it. I was nineteen that spring, and the lodger in the back room, a chart-maker named Tobias Venn, had been paying her in drawings rather than coin for a fortnight. He said he drew for men in Plymouth who needed the coast set down properly, though I never saw a letter to prove it.

The plaster came away in a sheet the size of a tea tray, and behind it was a sea I had not expected. Someone had painted a compass rose in ochre and lamp black, its points long and sharp, and round it a coastline going soft at the edges like cloud. Tobias came to look over my shoulder and went very quiet. 'Leave the rest,' he said. 'Let the wall tell us what it is before we tell it anything.'
We spent the summer uncovering it. Each evening, once the last lodger had gone up, he lifted a corner with a palette knife and I held the lamp. Rock came first, grey and broken, then a channel of water, then a small bird that might have been a gull or a question mark. By August the rose sat at the centre of a chart that filled most of the wall, and a fine scratched line ran from its needle straight to the cupboard under the stairs.
Mrs Pargeter wanted it limewashed over. Tobias folded his papers and said he had enough of the coast now to find his way back to it. On the last morning he left his old ink bottle on the mantel with a note tucked under it that read only: The needle is for you, Nell. Keep the lamp lit. I have kept it lit, and I have not yet opened the cupboard.
