Floral shoulder and upper arm tattoo
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large floral piece covers the shoulder and upper arm, centred on a purple and pink iris with red and peach open flowers beneath it and a white hydrangea-style bloom to the upper right. Petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine highlights, while the leaves and stems sit on a dark green background with pale swirling scrollwork around the edges. Colour ink dominates the composition, with the green ground and flowers filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The iris on the Dorking plot finally opened on Tuesday, two weeks after the frost we were all sure had killed it. Mr Abernethy came down to the glasshouse in his slippers to see it, which he has not done since his wife died. He stood there with his hands behind his back and said nothing for the longest time, then asked whether we could still sell the rhizomes, and I told him no, we'd keep them.
I know you think I've gone soft. You always said a nursery is a business that happens to have plants in it. But the hydrangeas he ordered in March have come up the colour of weak tea, and the poppies in the back bed are the red of a split lip, and the peach ones keep opening at dusk as if they'd been waiting for everyone to leave the room. Pale scrolls of bindweed have crept round the edge of the frame, and I've left them, because they look like something carved on a gate.
Anyway. The lease ends in October. Abernethy's grandson wants flats on the lower field and has already measured it out with string. I told him the iris has a root system older than the house. He laughed, which I suppose is fair.
Come up on the last Saturday and bring your secateurs. I'd like you to see it before the men with the digger do.
Love, Maud
