Compass rose on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits on the ankle, with a four-pointed star centred on a small circle and the letters N, E, S and W marking the cardinal points. The linework is fine and dark, with light shading in the compass rings and points. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, and the tattoo is centred in a close crop against a dark background.

The snow had buried the lane to Hebden by the third day, and Mrs Agnes Pollard had stopped counting the guests who came in stamping and swearing at the weather. He had been sent up to re-set the boundary stones before the thaw, and he talked about them as if they were people. "North is the only honest thing up here," he said on the fourth night, turning his compass in his palm until the needle wobbled and settled. "It never moves for anyone. It's the men who carry it that lie about where they are." Agnes asked him what he meant, but he only laughed and tapped the glass, and the needle swung back to point past her shoulder, at the kitchen door.
In the morning his bed was cold and his boots were gone. Agnes found a single set of prints heading out through the back gate and westward toward the ridge, already softening under fresh flakes. On the map, where he had been working, someone had drawn a small star with its four arms reaching to the letters of the points, and the compass lay open on top of it.
She took the brass case down from the nail, checked the needle, and found it still pointing at the back door. Agnes pulled her shawl tight, lifted the latch, and followed the needle's line into the white.
