Sunrise over a horizon line on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a rising sun with pointed rays sits on the skin, with a thin horizontal line running through its base and extending past both sides of the motif. The linework is even and thin with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink only against a pale, softly lit background. The composition is centred and simple.

The fair had been stuck on the cliff road for three days when Old Tomas found the sun in the bottom of the water barrel. He fished it out with a ladle, dripping and cross, and set it on the step of the strongman's wagon to dry.

Nobody on the fairground had seen the sun rise since the carousel was painted gold. The painter, a quiet woman called Ines, said the sun had gone to sleep behind the big wheel and would only wake for a fair price. So the showman sent the children up the hill with a jar of honey and a length of red thread to ask it politely.
The children came back at dawn with the thread wound round their wrists and a horizon they had unrolled behind them across the grass, one straight line running from the ticket booth to the far hedge. Where the line touched the ground, the sun lifted itself up slowly, its rays standing out in sharp points like the tips of a hand. Everyone on the fair stopped what they were doing to watch. The strongman forgot his weights, and the goat stopped chewing.
The sun only wanted one thing in return: to be let off the line on the morning the fair moved on, so it could rise over the next town. Ines painted its rays onto the wagon door so it would know the way. When the caravans rolled out before light, the children walked ahead with the thread still on their wrists, and the sun followed them along the road, climbing a little each time they looked back.
