Black compass rose tattoo with script lettering reading one love, placed centrally on the upper back.

Compass rose tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind shows a bold black compass rose centred on her upper back, with its long points radiating outwards. The words one love sit in small black script just above the compass, and the tattoo is set against smooth skin with a green vest top and grassy background. The ink is solid black with fine detail in the points, and the image is in natural daylight.

Every morning before the bells of St Brannoc's, Hanne Vell lit the ovens of the Crooked Loaf with a sprig of juniper and a word her grandmother had taught her, and every morning the wind off the marsh pushed the shutters open a crack. It was the wind that told her which way the day would go. A north wind meant rye bread and quiet customers. A west wind meant the fishermen would come early, shaking salt from their collars and wanting something hot in their hands.

The year the well froze, the wind would not settle at all. It turned round the compass like a dog looking for a place to lie down. Hanne cut a star into the flour board with the back of a knife, eight points and one long point running down toward the cellar, and beneath it she scratched two words, one love, because the bread did not care what the weather was doing and someone had to decide which way to face.

Her brother Tam came in from the quay with frost in his beard and a letter he could not read. He had sailed with the herring fleet and had not come back on the tide. He stood in the warm doorway and asked which way he should go to find the boat. Hanne did not know. She put a loaf in his hands, still too hot to hold, and told him the bread knew where it was going even when the baker did not.

He laughed at that, the first time in a month. Then he went out into the grey, and when the wind swung round to the west at last, she heard the harbour bell ring twice, the old signal for home, and she pressed her floury palm flat against the star on the board until it left a pale print of her hand.
