Mandala lotus on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, showing a black ink lotus flower tattoo centred between her shoulder blades. The lotus has layered petals filled with fine linework, dotted and geometric patterns, and a symmetrical mandala-like design. Two small dots sit above and below the flower, and the soft natural light and green forest background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Nobody on the Caddow Flats road owned a clock that agreed with another. I learned that arriving at the Lantern Motel an hour after the grill had closed. The owner, Marguerite Orr, pushed a key across the counter and told me the window faced the lake bed, and to keep the blind down after dark, because the lake bed threw light back at a person.

The lake had been dry since before my father was born. Its floor had cracked into plates the size of dinner tables, each curling at the edges into a pattern that repeated outward like petals, so that from the road rise it looked as if someone had pressed a stamp into the earth and walked off. I spent the morning photographing it with a borrowed camera, measuring a ring of dark salt spots, one above the other, a dozen paces apart.

On the third night Marguerite came out to find me sitting on the bonnet of my van. She carried a thermos and two enamel cups. "You're the surveyor," she said. "Everyone who comes out here with a theodolite thinks the flower is a map. It isn't. It's where the water went to die, and it kept the shape of the last thing it held." I asked about the dots. "Pegs," she said. "My husband drove them the year the water left, so we'd know if it came back."

I packed the camera before dawn. Marguerite was already on the step with her hand raised, not quite waving, more like someone holding a door. In the mirror the lake bed shrank to a pale mandala pressed into the dust, dots above and below, and I understood I had been measuring the wrong distance. It wasn't between the pegs. It was between the people who kept coming back to check them.
