Compass rose with crossed arrows on a shoulder

Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework compass rose sits inside concentric rings with a serrated outer edge, and two arrows cross through the design diagonally. The eight-pointed star at the centre is shaded with solid black ink, while the outlines and arrows are drawn in a single consistent line weight. The photograph is taken from behind and shows the tattoo on the upper back near the shoulder blade, against a dark background.

The sports hall still smells of floor polish and the same orange squash they served in 1998. Dev Okonedo-Marsh is already at the trophy cabinet when you come in, holding a brass-cased compass he swears he never borrowed. You know the one. It belonged to his grandad, and you took it on the Duke of Edinburgh expedition up Pendle Hill and lost it somewhere in the bracken.

He doesn't mention the compass straight away. He asks whether you still do any walking, whether you remember Mr Ferris making the whole year stand blindfold in the middle of the field until we could point north without peeking. You tell him you navigate by the bus timetable these days. Mostly you think about the arrows Ferris drew on the whiteboard, two of them crossing through a ring like a pair of scissors, and how he said north was never where you expected it to be.

Dev pulls a folded Ordnance Survey sheet from his jacket, soft as cloth at the creases. There is a pencilled circle round a field near the reservoir. "Found it in the hedge in March," he says. "Figured it was waiting for you." Inside the margin, in handwriting you don't recognise as your own, someone has drawn a compass rose with a serrated edge and written underneath: meet at the arrow, not the star.

You laugh and tell him you never wrote that. He shrugs and hands you the paper anyway. Across the hall the raffle lights dim, and you fold the map along its old lines and slide it into your inside pocket, right where the compass used to sit, and realise you have been holding your breath since the door opened.
