Compass rose with swirls and hatching
Black and grey · Flash
A compass rose design with a central sphere and long pointed arms radiating outwards, all drawn in black ink. The shading uses dense hatching and cross-hatching on the points and loose curling scrolls with scattered dots around the outer edges. The design is centred on a plain white background in greyscale.

Cook before me, Abel Pruett, swore the sphere in the middle was a glass ball he'd filched from a Lisbon chandler, and that the arms were ground so fine you could sight a star down them.

We lost the needle in the third week south. Not broken, mind, just wandering, swinging round like a drunk looking for his own door. Captain Vell wouldn't have it said the ship had no bearings, so he sent me up to the wheel with a pot of ink and told me to draw the true north back in by lamplight. I drew it wrong, of course. I drew the arms curling, like the wind had got into the paint, and the dots I flicked off the brush for spite. Next morning the lads swore the swirls had moved. Nonsense, I said. Paint doesn't walk.
But the needle stopped wandering the day we raised the Falklands, and it's never once lied to me since. So when you ask why I still scrub that hatch on a Sunday, lad, it's not for the Captain. It's to keep those curling arms honest, and to keep my own hand steady enough to point us home.
