Compass rose with a central rose
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A drawn tattoo design showing a compass rose with ornamental arms, each ending in a letter (N, E, S and W) with decorative flourishes. A shaded rose with thorny stems and leaves sits at the centre where the arms cross. The fine linework is in black with grey shading, set against a warm beige, parchment-like background.

Nell Okafor had worked nights on Ward 6 at Hollins General for eleven years, and still lost her bearings in the north corridor after midnight, where the lights dropped to amber and the radiator pipes knocked like someone wanting in. Her grandfather's brass compass hung from a loop on her lanyard. The glass was cracked across the N, and the card beneath had a rose engraved at its centre, its petals worn smooth by thumbs. She checked it the way other nurses checked their phones.

Tonight the needle would not settle. Bed 14 had been quiet since two, his daughter asleep upright in the visitor chair with a coat over her knees. Nell wrote the obs on the clipboard in the day room and glanced up at the window, which faced the car park, and the car park faced the ring road, and nothing about it said north. Dev came through pushing an empty trolley and told her the lift to the old wing had died again, so the bloods for Bay C would have to go down the back stairs.
"Which way's the stairwell from here?" she asked, mostly to hear herself. Dev pointed, wrongly, and she laughed and didn't correct him. She tilted the compass flat on her palm and watched the needle swing and shudder, then come to rest pointing at the rose, the way it always did when she stopped asking it for directions and simply let it be still. The stairs were where they had always been, behind the fire door with its wired glass, smelling of floor polish and something sweeter drifting up from the kitchens.
On the landing she heard the monitor in Bay C beeping steadily, and she followed the sound instead of the arrows. In the bay the girl in bed three was awake, holding a paper cup of water in both hands. "Are we lost?" she asked. Nell pulled the chair close and said, "Not any more," and meant it.
