Crab with spiral body design
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black crab drawn in a simplified, symbolic style, with two raised claws, eight thin legs and two antennae. The oval body contains two interlocking black spirals, set against a plain white background. The linework is solid and uniform, with no shading or colour, and the design is centred with generous white space around it.

Marcia had come to the Ashgrove Hall reunion with a plate of sausage rolls and no intention of discussing her star chart. Then Dev Okafor, who had once set fire to a bin behind the chemistry block, pressed a paper cup of warm prosecco into her hand and asked what sign she was.

"Cancer," she said. "Born on the twenty-second of June, which Mrs Pryce told the whole fourth year was the worst month to be sensitive." Dev laughed and said that explained the crab on her birthday card from 1998. Marcia said crabs weren't sensitive, they were armoured, and that the two spirals on the old chart were meant to be the moon's faces, one turning inwards, one turning out. Her mother had drawn them on the back of every card she ever sent.
At the far end of the hall, someone had found a box of old school reports. Dev read one aloud in a bad headmaster's voice: "Retreats when challenged. Should learn to pinch back." Marcia grabbed it from him, expecting to be mortified, and instead laughed so hard she had to sit on a stacking chair. Then she saw the name at the bottom of the page, Tom Hallam, who had sat beside her for five years and never once come to a reunion, and the laughter went out of her like tide off sand.
She folded the report into her handbag and left the sausage rolls on the trestle table. Outside, the car park smelt of wet bins and cut grass, and the moon hung low over the sports field, its two faces turned in opposite directions. Marcia stood under it for a long while, pinching the strap of her bag, trying to decide which way she was going to face.
