Mind the lift, love, it's been stuck between the fourth and fifth since the Jubilee, so we'll take the stairs and I'll tell it as we climb. Sixteen floors. Plenty of breath for a story if you don't mind the stops.

Ashgrove Tower had a spider living in the stairwell window at the top of the block, a long-legged thing the colour of old piano keys. Nobody bothered her. Mr Okonedo on eleven swore she sat so still she looked like a brooch someone had pinned there. Then the council painted the stairwell walls in those zigzag bands, orange and grey, and the spider took one look and began to copy them.

Every night she went out along the railings and spun her threads into triangles. Every morning the caretaker swept them away, and every night she spun them again, a little neater, with beads of dew caught at the joins like rivets. By the first frost her web was a diamond stretched between the security lamp and the fire door, and the people on the landings stopped to look at it on their way to work.

Here's the bit. When the lift was finally fixed in March, the engineer rode it to the roof with a torch and found silk strung across the shaft, one diamond on every landing, joined up through the chevrons like a ladder somebody had drawn for her. Mind the step, we're nearly there. That's the roof door. Go on, look at the wall.
