Crescent and lotus ornament on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a crescent shape across the shoulder with a lotus flower at its centre, from which strings of dots, small stars and a hanging diamond shape descend down the upper arm. A curling swirl finishes the lower end of the design. The work is rendered in fine black linework with stippled dots and soft grey shading, and the subject is shown in a dim indoor setting.

The snow has been falling since the carrier cart failed to come up the pass, and the innkeeper's widow, Mrs Haddow, has already shut the shutters on the lower floor. You are the one who climbs to the attic each evening to trim the wicks of the lamps hung along the rafters, brass lamps cast with lotus petals, each strung on a chain of small iron beads. Tonight there are only three guests: a surveyor, a silent monk, and a girl who won't give her name.

The girl asks you whether the moon is still up. You tell her it slid behind the ridge hours ago, a thin paring of light under the cloud. She says the moon always leaves something behind when it goes, a single hard star pinned to the dark, and that if you watch the place long enough it winks. You laugh and say that's only Venus. She doesn't laugh back, only turns her cup slowly on the table.
Later, when the wind leans on the eaves, you take the taper up the stair. The beads swing and the lamps tick against their hooks, and the lotus lamp is cold, its wick drowned in tallow. You refill it and strike the flint, and the light finds the small diamond of brass hanging beneath the cup, throwing a dot of gold across the boards. Outside, the wind curls round the gable in a long slow swirl, the same shape the girl drew on the frosted window with one finger.
In the morning the pass is open and the carrier's bells are ringing somewhere far below. The girl is gone, but the glass still holds a ring of breath-fog, and beneath it a row of tiny frost dots, like someone counting stars. Mrs Haddow asks whether anyone stayed in the attic. You pour the tea, say no, and leave the lotus lamp burning for whoever comes up the road next.
