Ornate hand mirror and rose on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold ornate hand mirror with a pearl-dotted frame sits above a red rose with dark green leaves, and a dotted pearl chain hangs beneath the design. The work uses thick black outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading, with a teal wash inside the mirror glass. The tattoo is shown in close crop on the outer upper thigh, with a pink top visible at the top edge of the frame.

Dear Brother Edmund,

You will laugh at me, but I have bent the Rule in a small way and must confess it to someone who will not take it to the Prior. The pedlar who came along the fen road in August had a hand mirror in his pack, wrapped in a pink shawl. Its frame was gilt and worked like a church screen, with little pearls pressed all round the edge, and a chain of beads hanging from the handle as though someone meant to wear it at the throat. He asked four shillings. I gave him three and the bread I had been saving for the almoner.

I have looked in it every morning since, which is vanity, and I know it. The glass is clouded at one corner, a teal sort of grey, so my face comes out of the water like something half drowned and then surfaces. Sister Winifred says that is the mercy of old glass: it does not show us all of ourselves at once.

Yesterday I carried it out to the rose bed by the infirmary wall, where the Damask had come back red after the frost. I held the mirror up beside the bloom and saw the two together, the petals dark at the centre and the leaves glossy as wet slate. For a moment I could not tell which was the picture and which was the thing itself.

I will leave it on the cloister step for whoever needs a glass. Pray for my weakness, and for the pedlar, who was kind enough to take three shillings from a nun.
