Crescent moon and triangles on the sternum
Geometric · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a crescent moon with a small upward triangle nested inside it, above a larger upward triangle, with three dots stacked above. The thin, even outlines are unshaded, and the design is centred on the sternum against a plain, softly lit background. The photograph is cropped to the chest and a black strappy top, with no face visible.

The ferryman's daughter kept the signal fire on the Skerrow rocks, and every night for thirty years she had raised the same three sparks before the moon rose. Nobody on the mainland had asked her why. The boats knew the sign: three sparks, then the cold crescent lifting over the water, then the small bright triangle of the lantern house roof, then the long triangle of the shoal beneath it. Steer for the notch between them and you would clear the reef.

The year the wind came from the north and did not stop, her younger brother Tam took the skiff out without asking. He was seventeen and thought the signs were for old women. She watched his lamp go out past the second light and then nothing. She lit the sparks anyway, one after another, until her fingers were raw from the flint.
In the grey before dawn a single lamp came in through the notch, slow and crooked, and bumped the stone steps. Tam climbed out with his hands blistered and his hair full of spray. He pointed at the sky. The moon had gone down, but the shape of it was still there in his eyes, he said, lined in black, the way it always was when you looked hard enough.
She banked the fire and said nothing about the sparks. Afterwards she cut a new notch in the lintel of the lantern house, and beside it, three small holes, so the sign would be there even on nights with no fire at all.
