Small hedgehog tattoo on upper chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small hedgehog outline sits on the upper chest, drawn in black ink with a stippled, dotted texture that gives it a soft, textured look. The image is black and white, and the photo is cropped from the chin down, showing the neck, collarbones and the top of a black lace bra. The tattoo is small and sits off-centre on the left side of the frame, with plenty of plain skin around it.

Behind the woodshed, where the stacked logs met the old hen house, something snuffled. You knelt in the drift and held the torch low. A hedgehog, no bigger than a loaf of bread, was pressed into a hollow of dead bracken, its spines dusted white like icing on a dropped cake.

Its breath came slow. You knew enough from your grandmother to know it should be asleep already, curled in a nest somewhere under the leaves, not out in a blizzard with the dark coming down at four. Someone had kicked the nest apart, or the frost had found it first. You had a scarf in your coat pocket and an apple box in the cellar. Nobody at the inn would ask what you wanted with the box.

Back in the kitchen the guests were arguing cheerfully over a game of cards, and the landlady looked up at the coal sack in your arms, then at the wool bundle you were holding in your other hand. She did not say anything. She only moved the kettle off the hob so the warmth would reach the cellar stairs.

By morning the plough had come up the valley road, and the box sat empty beside the boiler. Its straw was flattened in a neat round shape, and in the middle of it lay a single dry spine, left behind like a note.
