Crescent moon, stars and vines on back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon sits at the top of the design, with a trailing vine of leaves and curls running down from it. Three five-pointed stars sit to the right, outlined in dark linework and softly shaded in grey. The design is black and grey with shaded fills, photographed straight on against smooth skin.

The vine had reached the lamp bracket by the time Mrs Tregenza came down the steps with her shopping bag to tell me it was a menace. I told her it was a runner bean, which it was not, and she said the council had views. Nobody on Quay Street had ever won an argument with Mrs Tregenza, so I kept my eyes on the thing itself, which I had coaxed out of a cocoa tin the spring the Morwenna was sold and nobody came back for her mooring.

It climbed the iron post outside the chandlery where the old sign hangs, the one with a crescent moon painted cream and three gold stars beside it, most of the gold gone to grey. Mr Pascoe, who owns the shop, let me tie the first shoots to the bracket with strips of sail cloth. By August the leaves had folded over the moon's lower curve and the tendrils had begun to curl, one after another, like the ends of a ribbon someone had just let go of. Every evening I looked for a new curl and found one.
In October the rain came sideways for a week and the vine went brown at its edges. On the first clear night after, I walked down to the slipway with a flask and turned round to look back up the harbour. The moon on the sign was hidden under green, a crescent drawn in leaves, and the three stars hung above it where the lamps on the far pier had just come on. Mrs Tregenza's kitchen light was on across the way. I saw her at the window, standing very still, counting them.
