Crescent moon sugar skull with roses on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
A crescent moon forms the outer shape, with a sugar skull carved into its curve and decorated with dark eye sockets and ornate patterning. Two pink roses with green leaves sit at the lower edge, and small white sparkle stars and scrollwork fill the space around the skull. Bold black outlines are paired with soft teal and green shading on the moon and purple and pink tones in the background shading, photographed on the upper back.

The moon over Harrowmere has worn a skull's face for as long as the ferrymen can remember, and every autumn the Guild of Lamplighters sends its youngest to scrub the silver from its brow before the Feast of Lanterns. You are sixteen, and your hands shake on the ladder. Below you the river holds the moon's reflection like a cracked plate, and the boatmen are already singing the old count of the dead.

Master Oddny gives you a brush of goat hair, a pot of teal pigment ground from mussel shell, and a rule she repeats until it sounds like a prayer: paint the ornament, never the eyes. The sockets are where the dead look out, and if you fill them, the dead cannot find the road home. So you climb each night and work the scrollwork along the curve, and each night the white stars you dab beside the skull seem a little brighter than the night before.
On the last evening before the feast, a cart of mourners halts beneath the wall, and a woman calls up your name, which nobody in the town should know. She asks you to paint two roses at the moon's lower horn, pink as a bruise, so her husband can find his way across. The guild forbids it, you say. She smiles and says the moon has never obeyed a guild, and that you have already started, because the roses are sketched in the margin of your ledger in your own hand.
At dawn you climb down with paint on your cuffs. Oddny waits at the foot of the ladder with her arms folded, and she studies the moon for a long time before she speaks. You gave it roses, she says. It is not a question. You nod, and she laughs, low and tired, and tells you the guild has waited three hundred years for a keeper brave enough to paint the way home instead of the wall. Above you the moon hangs pale, and its pink petals drift loose, one by one, onto the river.
