Crest with helmet and blue stripe
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a shield set within an ornate frame of scrolls and acanthus-style leaves, with a helmet with a visible crest and nasal guard at the top. The shield and helmet are rendered in black and grey with soft shading and fine hatching, while a horizontal band across the shield is coloured bright blue. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the design sitting on a white sheet of paper.

The herald wanted the blue dry before the shield went up over the gate, so I sat on the step of Varrowmere's north tower with a pot of ground lapis and a rag, touching the band across the oak until it sat true. Lord Ansel had chosen the colour himself after the flood. One stripe of river-blue, he said, to show that the men who held the crossing had sworn to the water as well as to the crown. Nobody asked him what that meant. We only painted.

My grandfather had carved the helmet above the arch forty years before, its nasal guard worn smooth by the thumbs of every apprentice who had touched it for luck. Sister Oda insisted the scrolls around the frame were ferns, not leaves, and she would know, having walked the marsh road to gather them. I thought they looked like smoke that had decided to stay still. Between the two of them they had made a crest that needed no explaining.
The night the water rose, the bell in the tower rang until its rope burned through, and the crossing held because twelve men stood in the blue band at the causeway edge with their backs to the flood. I was one of them. I remember the cold climbing to my knees, and Ansel calling names over the roar until each man answered.
Spring came, and I climbed up to finish the lower edge of the shield. The paint was dry at last. Below me the river ran brown and quiet, and the blue stripe on the gate looked, for the first time, like the water it had been named for.
