Gramophone in an ornate frame with banner
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black linework drawing on tracing paper shows a gramophone with a flared horn, set inside an ornate oval frame with scrollwork. Leaves at the base have small dotted shading, and a banner across the bottom carries the words MUSIC IS A PLACE TO BE in capitals. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with a clipboard and pen visible at the top of the frame.

Right, you lot at the back with your glasses already filled, settle. My grandmother Vera used to say a wedding is just a gramophone with the needle dropped in the right groove, and she was never wrong about a needle. She had a horn-shaped Decca that sat in the front room of a terraced house in Walsall, and on the night she met my grandfather Tom the dance hall had hired a band that couldn't play a single tune through without stopping. So Vera went home, fetched that old machine on the bus with the horn wrapped in a bedsheet, and carried it up the hall steps like a bride carrying a bouquet.

Tom laughed at her. Then he lifted the lid, blew the dust off the turntable, and set the first record down. The whole hall went quiet for the crackle before the strings came in. Nobody danced, not at first. They just stood there, listening to a thing that had been waiting in a box all week to be played.
That is the part I want you to take home tonight. Vera said the music was never the point. The point was that somebody had to carry the machine up the steps, and somebody had to be brave enough to lift the lid. Music is a place to be, she told me, and you go there together or you don't go at all.
So raise your glasses to Vera and Tom, who went there together for fifty-one years, and to this young couple who have just carried their own heavy box up the steps tonight. Now somebody find that needle, and let's dance.
