Crossed fingers hand on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black outline of a hand with the index and middle fingers crossed, finished with solid black nails and a short fringed cuff at the wrist. The linework is even and unshaded, with small tick marks on the fingers, and the design sits on pale skin against a dark grey top and a wooden background. The photograph is in black and grey, and a partly visible grey rose tattoo appears at the bottom edge of the frame.

Dear Marguerite,

The customs man at Dover asked me three times whether I had anything to declare, and each time I said no with my fingers behind my back, which I suppose is the closest a person of my upbringing gets to lying with a clear conscience. You will be pleased to hear the bag of Lancashire cheese came through untouched. Mother's brooch I had sewn into the lining of my coat, and the coat, bless it, never once complained.
The fringed cuff on the photograph you sent of the drawing is exactly right, by the way. I had hoped the tattooist would make the wool look knitted rather than like a cheap ribbon, and he did. I have also decided the tick marks along the fingers are the years we spent pretending the letters from Antwerp were arriving late and not at all. You never did forgive me for that, and I am not sure I forgive myself.
The train to Brussels is full of men reading newspapers they have already finished. I keep my hand in my lap where the fingers can knot themselves up without anyone noticing. It is a foolish habit, a little prayer that the next station will hold the people we promised to meet. Tell Pieter the wedding dress fits, and that I will hem it myself if the seamstress in Ghent turns out to be as useless as the one in Canterbury.
Write to me care of the Hotel Rembrandt. If nobody answers at the desk, look for the boy with the red bicycle. He has been carrying my letters for three weeks and has never once asked what they say.
Yours, with all the crossing I can manage,
Evelyn
