Legs in high heels in a framed outline

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A raised leg wearing a stocking and a high heel shoe is drawn inside a thin black rectangular border. The linework is clean and even, with the shoe and stocking top filled in solid black for contrast. The tattoo is shown in black and grey and sits centred on the calf, with the frame giving the composition a defined edge.

The station at Coldharbour Halt had one bench, one lamp and a lost-property shelf that nobody checked. In the winter of the great frost, the porter Amos Greave found a single black heeled shoe standing at the platform edge, toe to the rails, as if someone had stepped down from the last train and never stepped back up.

He carried it into the waiting room and set it in the window, where the grey light fell on it each morning. Each morning it had been turned to face the timetable, and each evening it had crept a little nearer the door. Nobody came to claim it. His sister Nell knitted a black stocking top and hung it over the lamp to keep the shoe company, and the old men at the signal box said a lady had walked out of the frame of the world and left her heel behind to mark the spot.

Amos took chalk and then ink and drew a thin border around the window, so the shoe would stay within its square and not wander off down the line. Expresses thundered past without stopping. Snow filled the footprints on the platform as fast as anyone made them.

On the morning of the thaw the frame was empty. The shoe was gone, and a pair of small prints led out along the sleepers and then came back again, stopping at the bench. Amos found the shoe on the shelf beside the lost umbrellas, its heel polished bright. Tucked under the strap was a ticket, one way, stamped for a town that had no station and never had.
