Crossed pistons and spark plug with smoke
Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two crossed pistons with connecting rods, with a spark plug in the centre and wisps of smoke or flame shading around the edges. The linework is bold and outlined, with grey shading giving the metal parts volume and soft smoky gradients filling the background. The design is centred in a close, circular-framed photo against reddish skin.

The spark plug is still warm when Mags drops it in your palm, and the engine on the bench is already ticking as it cools, like a clock someone forgot to wind. Rain comes sideways through the bay doors of the depot at Lower Tarn. Outside, the last petrol lorry on the ring road waits with its lights off, and nobody has said yet who will be the one to tell its driver the parts are finished.

You learn the old way, because there is no other way left. You check the rod for play with your thumb and listen for the knock with your ear pressed to the block. The two pistons come off the rack crossed, the way they were laid out in the garage where Mags's grandfather taught her to swear in three languages. Their crowns are scorched black in rings. Where the smoke baked into the metal, a grey bloom has settled, soft as the sky over the flooded refinery on the far side of the estuary.
On the ninth night the engine turns over. The first cough is blue smoke. The second is a bark that rolls off the concrete and brings the dogs out from under the pallets. Mags stands with her arms folded and says nothing, which from her means it is good. By dawn the van is loaded with seed tins and a spare coil, and you are sitting in the cab with the window down, listening to the rods knock out a rhythm you have not heard since you were small.
You never learn where it went. Three weeks later a postcard arrives at the depot with a bridge on the front and no message, only a thumbprint of oil in one corner. Mags pins it above the bench beside the drawing of the crossed pistons, and every morning she checks the plug gap before she checks the weather.
