Grey rose and mechanical design on an arm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black and grey tattoo on an arm. A large rose with shaded petals sits at the lower edge, with a metallic, machine-like panel and a small angular emblem above it. The shading is soft and the linework is layered, with the image framed tightly on the skin.

Dear Ruth,

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since Tuesday, and Mr Okafor's stall under the iron awning has turned into a lake. I moved the brass gears into the biscuit tin before they could rust, and I kept the rose the way you asked, pressed flat in the back of the ledger where nobody looks. It's still a fine thing, that rose. Silver-grey, with the petals shaded so deep you could lose a thumb in them.

Yesterday a lad came to the stall with a cracked pocket watch and a drawing on the back of a bus ticket. He wanted the case to look like the panel on his old gramophone, all riveted plates and little angled badges, with a rose pushed through the middle of the works as if it had grown there. I told him the rose was the hard part. Anyone can bolt on metal. Making the petals look like they were breathing under the grey is the trick, and I said so. He laughed and said his nan used to say the same about bread.

He left the watch with me and came back this morning, shoulders soaked, asking whether it could be ready by Saturday. I told him it could. I didn't tell him the emblem on the back was my idea, a small angular sign I copied from the old Co-op clock tower before they pulled it down. I'm not sure why I did that. Maybe so that something of mine would keep time somewhere.

Come Saturday, bring the kettle. I'll show you the watch, and you can tell me whether the rose looks alive or only very well drawn.

Love, Mags
