Crucifixion scene across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of a crucified figure on a wooden cross fills the upper and mid back, with the head, arms and torso rendered in detailed shading. The figure wears a wrapped cloth at the waist and has a wreath of thorns on the head. The soft greys and deep blacks give the piece a realistic, sculptural look against the skin.

The cross at Saltcote was cut from the mast of a ship that came in on the spring tide the year the bells went under the harbour wall. Old Mered, who had carved gull-heads for the fishing boats since he was small, took the mast to his yard and said nothing about it for a whole winter. Folk brought him their questions and he answered with shavings.

When he finally began, he worked the arms first, wide as a man's wingspan, then the body, rising out of the grain like something surfacing. Children came to watch from the wall. Hana, who was nine and bold, asked why the figure hung with his head bowed and his feet crossed like a sleeper's. Mered put down his adze. "Because the wood remembers the weight," he said, "and I'd rather it did than me." She didn't understand, but she kept coming back.
Thorns took him a month. Each point he shaved thin enough to let the light through, and where the wood split he left the crack, saying a split was only a place where the story had got in. When the first gale of autumn came, the cross stood on the headland, and the fishermen steered by it, though none of them could say why it steadied them.
Hana was the last to see it finished. She climbed the headland at dusk and laid her palm flat on the carved shin, where the grain was warmest from the day's sun, and felt the small nail-holes he had left unfilled. Then she went home along the cliff path with the lamps coming on in Saltcote below.
