Robed religious figure with halo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo shows a long-haired, bearded figure in a flowing robe, with one hand raised and the other extended, set against an ornate scrolled halo. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth grey gradients across the face, hair and fabric folds. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, and the photo is taken straight on, filling the frame with the upper arm and shoulder.

By the time the ovens were hot the flour still hadn't turned up, and Dorota was muttering in Polish at a sack someone had shifted behind the proving cabinet. I had the trays out and the bench dusted, and I was in no mood to be told by anyone, least of all the picture above the cupboard, that it was hanging crooked.

Mr Pell had left it behind when he sold us the shop in March, a framed print of a robed man with one hand lifted, the other turned open toward the room as if he were about to hand someone a loaf. Round his head curled a halo of iron scrollwork, rusted at the edges where the damp got in. Every morning since, I have meant to straighten it. Every morning I have found some reason not to climb on the stool.

Dorota found the flour at quarter past four, wedged behind the sacks where Pell must have stashed a reserve he never told anyone about. We worked without talking for a while, scoring the loaves and sliding them onto the stone. The first tray came out at a quarter to five, the crusts blistered and gold, and the whole back room smelt of something older than either of us.

I tore the heel off the first loaf and gave Dorota the bigger half. Through the window the car park had gone from black to slate, and the lamp over the oven threw its light up onto the frame, so the halo seemed to catch fire for a moment. I left the picture exactly as it hung. Pell would have done the same.
