Black script lettering tattooed in several lines along a woman's side and ribs, with her hand resting on her arm and skin glistening with water.

Cursive script lines along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's bare side and ribs are shown with several lines of fine black cursive script tattooed down the skin. The wording is too small to read clearly at this size. Water droplets sit on the skin and dark wet hair falls over the shoulder, with the sea and sky blurred behind.

You asked in your last letter whether the sea still comes up to the wall. It does, every spring tide, and each morning I go down to the shingle with a bucket to see what it has left. Mostly kelp and a broken crab pot. Yesterday there was a glass bottle with a cork still in it and a page inside, damp and gone soft as cloth, written in a hand I did not recognise. I could make out only a few words before the ink ran. I have kept it on the sill beside the salt cellar, where the light is.

I will not sell the house. I know you think I should, and I know the Carrow boy would take it for the price of a good horse. But I am tired of other people's arithmetic. If you come at Michaelmas, bring the good scissors and not the blunt pair you always leave behind, and we will cut the honeysuckle back before it swallows the gate.

Your loving mother, Ada
