Daisy vine down the back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A bare back shows a column of colour daisy-style flowers in pink, orange and red, joined by fine black vine and swirl linework that winds from the upper back to the lower back. The petals use soft shading and gradient colour, while the stems and tendrils are solid black with clean outlines. The flowers are spaced down the spine and the composition follows the curve of the body.

Snow had shut the pass for nine days when the carter Tobiah came down the stair of the Lantern Inn with a tin inside his coat. The seeds in it were meant for a valley farmer on the far side of the mountain, but the road was closed and the seeds had begun to sprout in the damp.

Mistress Orla took the tin from him by the kitchen fire and tipped its contents onto a clay dish. The shoots were pale as candle wax. She said nothing about the snow. She found a length of old twine and a hook in the beam above the settle, and tied the first shoot to it.
Every morning the guests came down to find the vine a finger's width longer. It wound along the beam, over the hook, down the back of the settle and along the sill where the frost ferned the glass. The travelling priest said it was no plant for February. The cooper's widow said it wanted sunlight. Orla only fed it warm water from the kettle and let it climb.
By the time the pass opened, the vine had reached the rafters and burst into flowers the colour of cooked apricot and plum, each with a yellow heart like a small lamp. Tobiah came back up the road for his tin and stood in the doorway a long while. Orla handed him a cup of mulled wine and a single bloom snapped at the stem. "Carry that one down," she said. "The rest stay where they've been put."
