Black and grey roses with vines on a hip
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large roses, one above and one below, with shaded petals, curling stems, thorny vines and leaves. The linework is bold and the shading is soft and smooth, giving the roses depth and volume. The design is entirely black and grey and wraps diagonally from the upper hip down the side of the thigh against a white cloth.

The steward came up the lane on the third morning of frost, asking for the two roses against the south wall, the ones Nell's grandmother had planted from a single root and never once pruned. He wanted them cut for the lord's daughter's wedding, to be laid along the church steps, since nothing else in the county would be in bloom by March.

Nell took him through the gate without a word and showed him the wall. The vine had climbed the bricks like a stair, looping round the sundial and back again, its leaves dark as wet slate. The upper rose hung heavy, its petals folded like the pages of a letter nobody had finished. The steward drew out his knife and reached for the lower bloom. Nell said only that thorns had a habit of remembering who had taken from them.
He cut anyway. The stem gave way with a sound like a snapped harp string, and by dusk his glove was bled through. The rose he had carried to the house had gone from cream to grey in the lamplight. The lord's daughter sent her maid down to the wall, and the maid found the vine already knotting itself back together over the bricks, new shoots reaching for the place where the cut had been.
On the morning of the wedding the church steps were bare. Instead, the two roses on the south wall had opened in the frost, each petal edged with rime, and nobody in the village could say how they had come through the cold. Nell swept the path and left the knife on the step for the steward to collect, its handle wrapped in a single leaf.
