Dandelion seeds turning into birds with script quote

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A black silhouette of a dandelion stalk releases seed heads that dissolve into fine wisps and small flying birds, with two larger swallows at the top right. The script text Every breath is a second chance runs diagonally beneath the seeds. The image uses solid black and white with fine lines on the seed filaments and no shading or colour.

The dandelion clock was already coming apart in my fist when the 14:12 came round the bend, so I did what Gran taught me and blew. Most of the seeds went sideways into the wind over the platform edge, but a few lifted straight up, the way she said they always did when you meant it.

Gran worked the signal box at Harrow Lane for thirty years and never once let a child pick a dandelion without making a wish first. Every seed was a passenger, she said, and every passenger had its own fare to pay. Ruth had bought her ticket to Carlisle with the last of the money from the house sale, and we had spent a fortnight not talking about it over cold toast. This morning she had finally laughed at something I said, and then she was counting her bags on the bench like she was afraid one would walk off without her.

The doors shut with that flat sigh trains make. Ruth's face appeared at the window, then her palm, pressed flat against the glass. Outside, the seeds had caught the carriage roof and were rolling along beside it, grey wisps that thinned into nothing, and then something quicker than wisps. Two swallows cut up past the signal gantry and banked over the line, and the train slid off after them towards the cutting.

I walked home by the footbridge with the stalk still in my hand, bare and ridiculous. Three seeds had stuck to the sleeve of my coat. I didn't blow them. I just kept them there, the way you keep a ticket after the journey is over.
