Feather dissolving into flying birds
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a long feather rising from the bottom left, with its quill and barbs shaded in fine grey tones and a pale highlight along the shaft. Small black bird silhouettes spread out from the feather's tip and drift up towards the top right of the white background. The composition is diagonal and open, with plenty of empty space around the motif.

Dear Ada, The mist nets came down early this year because the wind backed round to the north-east on Tuesday and nothing was flying low enough to catch. I spent the morning with your grandad's old ledger instead, the one with the cracked green cover, and found the page where he wrote down every bird he ringed in 1979. Starlings mostly. Forty-one of them in one April week.

Yesterday, walking the shingle bank past the sluice, I picked up a primary feather from a gull, long and grey, the barbs still combed straight. I brought it back in my coat pocket like a fool. I put it on the windowsill to dry and watched the light move across it. When I came back at four the sun had shifted and a draught from the door had lifted it off the sill onto the floor, and I swear it looked like it was about to get up and go.
That's the thing about feathers, your grandad used to say. They don't fall so much as hand the air over to something else. He liked to stand at the edge of the reeds at dusk and count what left them: rooks first, then the thrushes, then the little bunting flocks that break apart into nothing before you can name them. He said a flock is only a feather that has forgotten it was one.
I've tucked the gull feather into the ledger, between the April pages where he kept his favourites. Come up at half term if the trains run. We'll walk out at dusk and see what the reeds let go. Love, Nan.
