The nib had split in the second word, so the ink bled into the hairline strokes, and the clerk swore under his breath, the only English anyone had heard from him that morning. He blotted the page, blew on it, and started the word again. Daughter. He wrote it in the old hand with the long pointed hooks the bell-founders preferred, because the parish register had been kept that way since before the foundry at Cold Ashby had a chimney.

Ada watched from the bench beside the font. She was nine and had been told to sit still, so she sat with her boots stuck out and the scuffed toe resting on the flagstones. Her father's will lay open next to the register. It said the foundry passed to the eldest child, and the clerk's task was only to write down who that was. There had been a son once, lost in the millpond the winter before, so the question should have been simple, and nobody in the room said so.

When the page was dry he turned the book towards her. The word sat across the ruled line like a bell hung crooked on its yoke, dark and heavy, and she could not read the letters, only their shape. 'That is you,' he said. 'It looks heavy because it is. You will find it carries.'

She put a finger on the last stroke. The ink was still tacky and came away grey on her skin. Out in the yard the founders tapped the mould, and the windows hummed with the metal settling. Ada rubbed her finger on the inside of her boot until the mark was gone from her hand but not from the leather, and she kept it there, a word she could not yet read, waiting for her to grow into it.
